From Skardu to Askole

July 29, we face a long trip from Skardu to Askole, running on three jeeps the spectacular valleys of Indo, Shigar and Braldo. The landscape during the travel is nothing less than magnificent, our sight meets everywhere giant alluvional conoids and giant and spectacular landslides, which clearly depicts the geomorphologic changes occurred in time within these areas. Heading towards Skardu
We wake up at 5:00am and find Islamabad under the rain. What a change after the latest days’ hot weather! Now we are afraid for our flight which could bring us to Skardu, the very first stop in our long journey towards Baltoro. Our fearing is however wiped away when we arrive at the airport: it seems that the weather is fair enough to let us land without troubles; within a few hours we complete the latest preparations and leave. Islamabad: first stop towards Baltoro
Expedition’s team will spend the next days in Islamabad, to define the final bureaucratic procedures and the latest logistic details with the Pakistani Government, before enter the restricted area if the Baltoro glacier, in the Pakistan’s northernmost region. Weather forecasts by Centro Epson Meteo
The project “On the Trails of the Glaciers” will take advantage by the collaboration of the eminent Centro Epson Meteo (CEM) for the coverage of the weather forecasts during the expedition’s activities in Karakorum. CEM will give team members a constant coverage of the evolution of the atmosferic fisic parameters, with the elaboration of custom chartes for the Baltoro glacier region. The TV documentary
The project “On the Trails of the Glaciers” plans a video documentary, for a total lenght of about 60 minutes, in high definition format. For video shootings last generation digital gear will be used, and in particular we’ll work with Sony PMW-EX3 camcorders, able to make available a non-linear XCAM workflow with the best full-HD quality on the market within a semi-portable camcorder. This device can switch between the 1080i and the 720p modes, and is equipped with the legendary trademark “CineAlta 24P”, able to record with multiple frame-rates (for example 59.94i and the native 23.98P). THE FIRST EXPEDITION IS READY TO GO!
We are happy to announce that the Pakistani Government has finally released the official permit which will allow the team’s expedition to access the restricted Baltoro glacier area with photografic, video and scientific equipments. Starting date is fixed for July 24. Re-entry on the 4th of September. We invite you to follow the team’ activities through the updates that will be published periodically on the web-site.
“On the Trails of the Glaciers”: first expedition starts
The departure of the first expedition of photographic-scientific project “On the Trails of the Glaciers” is scheduled for 24th July 2009. The team will depart from Milan with a direct flight to Islamabad, Pakistan, to begin the long journey toward the Baltoro glacier, the main goal of this first mission.
The project aims to revisit some of the most important historic expeditions, including the memorable expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi in 1909 (of which this year commemorates the hundredth anniversary), with the aim of achieving, by retracing the same points of view, new images that will be used to observe the changes occurred to the Karakorum’s glacial environment in the last hundred years. Mission status report: delayed departure
The expedition is still on its starting lane, waiting for the pakistan government to release the official permission, in order to let us access with scientific, video and photo gear the restricted area of the Baltoro glacier. The permission is necessary in order to safeguard expedition’s members, gear and sponsors’ investments. Further news will be available in the next hours.
